Livros voadores

Common misspellings

The supernatural and beyond / the supernatural and the beyond

One out of... four?

"Our main skills [...] have been an ability to work hard, to think creatively, to work in teams and to get a job done. Those skills are the same for any product.

The process is the same too: you research your idea well enough to know that your intuition is right [...]"

The short story revolution

"Chekhov saw and understood that life is godless, random and absurd, that all history is the history of unintended consequences.

He knew, for instance, that being good will not spare you from awful suffering and injustice, that the slothful can flourish effortlessly and that mediocrity is the one great daemonic force."

Andávamos a par no jardim, porta a porta, escoltavas-me no caminho com a cauda a bater-me no casaco

Podcast

Here is the podcast of the sports program of Radio L I was listening to as I was heading for volley on Monday:
"…now reporting live from 'the Court', where we seem to have a full house; John?
[background chanting and cheering]
- Yes, thank you, Tim. Indeed, thousands of supporters have gathered here and completely packed this beautiful arena. Everyone is expecting a great match today.
- What an atmosphere it must be. And do we already know who will be playing?
- I believe it is just about to be announced through the PA system… yes... here it is, live, the official line-up for today's match, as the players enter!
[loud background music, heavy noise, loudspeaker voice]
- Lubica the sky captain S [cheers, strong whistling]
- Pavol volleyballer of the gods H [loud cheers, women fainting]
- Klara the cannon K [heavy clapping, horning]
- Hugo the flying P [P! P! P! P! P!]
- Tibor the master blocker T [women screaming, bra-tearing]
- Michaela much more than a pretty face S [the crowd goes wild]
- Kristyna the flamingo Z [hysterical clapping, panting, police intervention sounds]
..."
I couldn't hear anymore because I was entering the garage but I really felt like I had experienced a magical radio moment!

[flamingos frequently stand on one leg, both when feeding and at rest. The reason for this is not fully known. Some sources report to have observed this behaviour also when flamingos play volley - a most rare and exquisite event; this yet remains unconfirmed]

Elephant

An elegant Elephant waltzing along
was heard to sing this marvellous song:

"How grand to be an Elephant, yes-sir-e:
strong and brave as anyone can be,
and also smart and kind, you must agree!

I could have settled for a lovely bee
but nothing on earth - from A to Z
quite matches the true likes of me!

As I can hug a giant tree, you see,
I surely must be nature's apogee.
Swell and big, it simply seems to me...
everyone should an Elephant grow to be!

Yes, I've tried to think of a better thing but can't;
the very best thing is to be an El-eeeee-phannnnnt".

Amsterdam

Amsterdam… what a magnificent city under a perfect summer day.
Full of young people, beautiful young people, walking and cycling and rowing all around ('Lebensraum' gains a different meaning over there; I can't even imagine how walking in Hong Kong might feel).

I was caught in a traffic jam of gay-parading boats: ours had to move to the right to ease the overtake by another, packed with wigged men dressed in white sheets (and very little else). I guess there are not many places where that can happen. And it seems to say welcome in a million colours. New York with a smile. But water instead of tarmac. And slim 3-story houses instead of sky scrappers. And relaxing bikers instead of angry cabs. Ok, ok, forget NY.

Go to the Jordaan, it would be a piece of heaven in any crazy world. Dream of what would be getting lost there on your way home. For that, buy one of those grand gabled houses built for the movers and shakers of the 17th-century Golden Age (I almost did, before I took a closer look at my wallet).

Wouldn't you then want to get a piano just to see it go up and in through your window? What giant promise of pearl happiness would such oyster moment hold?
"I am moving to this magical neighbourhood; I am even adding a piano to it. My beautiful model girlfriend will play it, joyfully singing the life that lies ahead".

Yeah, something like that. :)

Estranhos cumprimentos

Take care. Stop it. I don't care.

E sinto a minha pequena potência.

- Pois eu tenho estudado muito o nosso amigo Gonçalo Mendes. E sabem vocês, sabe o Sr. Padre Soeiro quem ele me lembra?
- Quem?
- Quem?...
- Portugal.

Eça de Queiroz

In a war everyone registers

"You know what the trouble with peace is? No organization.
And when do you get organization? In a war.

Peace is one big waste of equipment. Anything goes, no one gives a damn...
I've been in places where they haven't had a war for seventy years and you know what?
The people haven't even been given names. They don't know who they are!

It takes a war to fix that. In a war everyone registers".

Bertold Brecht, Mother Courage

Verso

Quick

Serendipity: good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries

Coined by Horace Walpole (1717-92) in a letter to Mann (dated Jan. 28 1754). Rarely used before the 20th century.

Walpole said he formed the word from the Persian fairy tale "The Three Princes of Serendip", Seredip being an old name for Ceylon, modern Sri Lanka (from the Arabic 'Sarandib', from the sanskrit 'Simhaladvipa', "Dwelling-Place-of-Lions Island").

In the fairy tale, the heroes "were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of".
