«It could be said (...) that to take a wife is to take a history. And if that’s so, then I understand that I’m outside history now (…). Or you could say that my history has left me. Or that I’m having to go on without history. Or that history will now have to do without me - unless my wife writes more letters, or tells a friend who keeps a diary, say.
Then, years later, someone can look back on this time, interpret it according to the record, its scraps and tirades, its silences and innuendoes.
That’s when it dawns on me that autobiography is the poor man’s history. And that I am saying goodbye to history.
Goodbye, my darling.»

Reciclagem

Numa cena do filme Singles, Bridget Fonda elogia Bill Pullman, o seu cirurgião plástico, que está sem namorada: és cirurgião («many babes are into that»), tens uns olhos bonitos e «sobrancelhas confiáveis».

Mas ele responde com um argumento inatacável: «See, I don’t know how to have fun».

Joy Division

When the routine bites hard, and ambitions are low
And the resentment rides high, but emotions won't grow
And we're changing our ways, taking different roads
Then love, love will tear us apart again

Why is the bedroom so cold? Turned away on your side?
Is my timing that flawed - our respect run so dry?
Yet there's still this appeal that we've kept through our lives
Love, love will tear us apart again

Do you cry out in your sleep - all my failings expose?
There's a taste in my mouth, as desperation takes hold
Is it that something so good just can't function no more?
When love, love will tear us apart again

Fight club

Every time the plane banked too sharply on take-off or landing, I prayed for a crash, or a mid-air collision - anything.

No more haircuts. Nothing matters, not even bad breath.

Life insurance pays off triple if you die on a business trip.

Almost 10 years later

Finland, Espoo. How nice.

At least, my lovely and cosy hotel room. Just over the darker and different-looking window of the laptop, I had a view to scattered pine trees, a live squirrel running up and down and, farther in the background, the somewhat grey Baltic sea.

Disappointed in the sun

Who could tell the story better
About the things that I went through
Some were great but most were terrifying and so spooky too

Had to get out of there, to hide away
Had to get out of there, to find my way
I troubled everything too soon
Now where I want to be is
Where I want to be is

Need I say my only wish was
To escape my earthly life
High skies were no option whereas
Diving deep in oceans wide

Was the way for me, to hide away
A possibility, to leave today
I troubled everything too soon
Now where I want to be is
Where I want to be is

Under the sea is where I'll be
No talking 'bout the rain no more
I wonder what thunder will mean, when only in my dream
The lightning comes before the roar

Circumstantial situations, now I know what people meant
Beware of the implications, God I've had enough of them
Dedicated to be brave and find a way
Just picking out a wave and slide away
I troubled everything too soon
Now where I want to be is
Where I want to be is

Maybe taking it another hour then taking away the pain
Maybe taking it another hour then taking away the pain
Maybe taking it another hour then taking away the pain
Then taking away the pain
Then taking away the pain
Then taking away the pain
I troubled everything too soon
Now where I want to be is
Where I want to be is

Under the sea, is where I'll be
No talking 'bout the rain no more
I wonder what thunder will mean, when only in my dream
The lightning comes before the roar
Under the sea, down here with me I find I'm not the only one
Who ponders what life would mean if we hadn't been
So disappointed in the sun

And that's why we're thinking
That's why we're drinking in a bar under the sea
And that's why we're thinking
That's why we're drinking in a bar under the sea

Of wine and men

Shesmu was an ancient Egyptian demon-god of the underworld, the god of precious oils for beauty and embalming and the god of the wine press.

Equaly important, it was he who, after the death of men, helped the justified by offering them red wine to drink and caught the sinful ones for punishment.

Under the orders of Osiris, he would chop up the wrongdoers, take their heads and toss them into a wine press, as grapes to create blood wine (In The Book of the Dead, Shesmu was known as "Lord of the Blood").

The blood wine - and the bodies - turned into sustenance for Unas, giving him power and strength (Unas was the last king of the 5th dynasty but in death, King Unas is identified with the gods Ra and Osiris).

Looking for a wallet in the garden

I tried to look for it (somewhat lazily) yesterday but so far without success.

I could not keep the searching activity going on for long though, as peer pressure was mounting and I could sense the people in the nearby buildings preparing to call the police and report a lunatic messing around with their plants...

But I did try to get myself into the mind of the robber - you know, like in the movies - and reconstruct his/her little after-crime walk, retrieving dozens of large denomination bills from the wallets (and a whole € 7 from mine) and then carefreely throwing them to the headquarter lawns of big corporations...

When I merrily started to whistle I realized this day dreaming might get me into trouble... or make me decide on a career change.

American Beauty too

Lester, narrating: Janie's a pretty typical teenager. Angry, insecure, confused. I wish I could tell her that's all going to pass... but I don't want to lie to her.

American Beauty

Boss: I'm not paying you to do... whatever it is you're doing out here.
Ricky: Fine. So don't pay me.
Boss: Excuse me?
Ricky: I quit. So you don't have to pay me. Now leave me alone.
Boss: ...asshole.
Lester: I think you just became my personal hero!

Standing on the gallows with my head in a noose
Any minute now I'm expecting all hell to break loose

People are crazy and times are strange
I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range
I used to care, but things have changed

This place ain't doing me any good
I'm in the wrong town, I should be in Hollywood
Just for a second there I thought I saw something move

Lord of War

Some of the most successful relationships are based on lies and deceit.
Since that's where they usually end up anyway, it's a logical place to start.
