On my first winter here, I got convinced that the locals had a (good, self-mocking) sense of humour when I saw these plants in the valley, tendered to the shape of letters so that you could read from above:

As I stared at my shoes in the ICU
that reeked of piss and 409
And I rationed my breaths
as I said to myself that I'd already taken too much today
As each descending peak on the LCD
took you a little farther away from me

Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines
in a place where we only say goodbye
It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds
But I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose than to have never lain beside at all
And I looked around at all the eyes on the ground as the TV entertained itself
'Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous pacers bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes round and everyone will lift their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said that "Love is watching someone die"
So who's going to watch you die?

O final é tão espectacular que me fez aumentar a fé já pouco condicional em William Forsythe.
Cerca de 40 bailarinos, com cabeleiras à tigela e vestidos (homens e mulheres) com uniformes femininos de colégio interno, a avançar em círculo, com movimentos ritmados, lembrando 'another brick in the wall', num crescendo impossível, tribal, hipnotizador.

Apanhado no cabo, já quase no fim.
Numa festa, dois amigos incentivam James Spader a interessar-se pela anfitriã, de quem enumeram um rol de qualidades.
Ele resiste quase em silêncio, acaba por levantar-se, passa por entre os convivas, aproxima-se do mini-aspirador que está pendurado na parede. Pega no bicho, abre-o inquisitoriamente, revela, quase em grito:
- 'There's no dust in her Dust Buster!'
Como se aquela ausência tivesse feito ressoar outro maior vazio, salientado uma falta de autenticidade, roubado a possibilidade de verdade.
O resto, é a história de amor entre o jovem Spader e Susan Sarandon.

A friend once told me: 'there are worse things than being punched in the stomach'.
Standing up for ourselves, defending others and sticking to good principles is a reward in itself, even if you don't always succeed.
Feet on the ground, no foolish fairy tale like behaviour; just taking resolute though pondered action when needed.

Winding narrow streets bordered by three-story Italian-looking villas that climb up a little hill with the most wonderful view of the bay of Trieste.
The people are nice and the food appetizing, even if a little bit concentrated on squid and grilled fish; but I guess if you have to focus on something, fish is the thing in which to do it.
Still the main course is really the terrace by the sea.
