I do not have a particular problem with this, to be honest (I may have with other things);
at the time, in Portugal and at his age, nearly everybody was extreme-left by today's standards;
and people are entitled to change, update and improve their views; it is rather a sign of narrow-mindedness when people stick to some idea even when proven wrong
(provided this reasoning is not perverted to justify all and any turn-coating).
