Many scenarios foresee a convergence of technologies in a single portable device that will handle communication, computing, scheduling, finances and entertainment. To these, one could add the permanent, ubiquitous access to an upgraded Internet (that would be more similar to an universal, accurate, instantaneous, multimedia, interactive encyclopaedia).

But communication is far more then simply sending or receiving information through ever more powerful technologic channels. At issue is not which platform is being used but also who sends, receives or tries to analyse the data, as well as the social and cultural context that embeds the process. For instance, if citizens lack a robust notion of self or clear social goals, an excessive speed of (ex)change risks only to further isolate already fragmented individuals and societies.

The great capabilities of the information and communication tools ahead should rather empower people to find, strengthen or create noble meaning within themselves and valuable purpose in their social interactions.
